This year we celebrated the 20-year anniversary of the Chicago
Sports Fans Choice Awards Program by looking back on the most
memorable events which took place during this time in Chicago
sports. We recalled the top sporting news, honored all of our
Hall of Famers, and remembered all the truly missed athletes who
passed away during these past 20 years.
We also honored our annual Jewel Jr Essay Contest Winners. These
five children were selected for their outstanding essays on the
importance of teamwork. We received thousands of essays this year,
and these five children, from across the Chicagoland area, were
honored with awards during this year's show. Jewel has made this
program a priority in their stores and encourages the importance
of developing these community values in today's youth.
We were also proud to introduce this year the "Meijer Hometown
Heroes". This special segment will regularly be featured
with the program - honoring Chicago's top athletes for their commitment
to kids and for their work in the community as strong role-models.
These Meijer Hometown Heroes will be making appearances in various
Meijer stores later in January so stay-tuned for more details
coming soon. This year's HomeTown Heroes included; Robbie Gould,
Chris Duhon, Diego Gutierrez, Bobby Jenks and Brian Sipotz.
This year Chicago's MVP Award went to Devin Hester of the Bears,
and our Rising Star honor went to Tyrus Thomas of the Bulls.
Stand up comedy by John Caponera rounded out the evening this
year.
And all net proceeds from our silent auction will once again
benefit Bear Necessities. A local charitable organization which
helps young cancer patients and their families cope with this
life threatening disease.
Thanks for voting and being a part of the 20th anniversary of
the Chicago Sports Fans Choice Awards.
